Uganda, Africa, June 2014

What Trevor and I thought was impossible just 2 years ago is now possible. After we received a diagnosis of thyroid cancer February of 2012, I underwent surgery and radiation treatment and our dreams of a mission trip quickly faded. We spent the next couple of years focusing on just taking care of me. Without medical explanation and what was truly a modern day miracle, 16 months later, God healed me of the cancer that had spread to my lungs. Instead of undergoing a second round of radiation, we were able to slowly get our lives back!
With four tumors still left in my neck, I won’t know when I will be completely cancer free. In all of our fear and all of the excuses the world has given us, God has been asking us to share the hope and healing we have received through Christ. So in this crazy journey together we are following God’s leading to Uganda this summer on a mission trip! Through this mission trip we hope to give back the blessings we have received by serving the orphans of Uganda.
We will be traveling with an organization called Visiting Orphans. We will be gone for 12 days and will work with several organizations based out of Jinga and Kampala, Uganda. The heart of the trip will be loving on kids and sharing the love of Christ, which we couldn’t be more excited about!
Below are the details of the ministries we will be working alongside. After a brief summary of the ministry, bullet points will follow which will summarize the work we will be doing.

This Orphanage provides a home and care for infants and toddlers who have been abandoned.
-will be washing clothes, feeding, bathing, holding, and loving on these kiddos

Sole Hope  - http://www.solehope.org
This organization is centered on helping prevent the jigger problem in Uganda.  Since the children there do not have shoes, these jigger bugs bury into the bottom of their feet causing infection, amputation, and death.
-work a clinic day to assist as children get jiggers removed from their feet
-distribute handmade shoes to the children to prevent jiggers

This is a ministry that seeks to provide healing physically, emotionally, and spiritually to the people of Uganda.
-2 days spent here in rural hut villages
      -give malaria education and prevention
-help with medical and maternal care
      -tell Bible stories to kids
      -pray with Muslim women

Abide Family Center  - http://www.abidefamilycenter.org
This goal of this center is to reduce the number of children in orphanages in Uganda. Abide provides job skill training for parents and other resources to help keep families together.
-do home visits in the village
-babysit children while parents are working
-teach job skill training to parents

My Father’s House  - http://www.myfathershouseintl.org
This ministries goal is to place orphaned and abandoned children into small group home families where they can be loved and nurtured. They also run a school with 400 children.
-share God’s word through presentation and worship service
     -play with children

This ministry helps with orphaned and vulnerable children by providing for their needs.
-Trevor will help lead a sports/field day
-Laura will help lead an afternoon of arts and crafts
-will provide and serve a feast for the children
     -run a VBS program
